Police assistance wanted following plant thefts at Walkway

PUBLISHED February 2023

Plants stolen on Monday 2 January

On Monday 2 January around 6.00pm a number of individuals stole around 20 plants from the Bruce Kingsbury VC memorial Garden, which is at the front of the Education Centre.

The Board is extremely disappointed this has occurred, especially since the garden was only opened in early November. CCTV footage has identified a number of individuals taking the plants around 6.00pm on that day, while it was still very light in the day.

The footage is now with Burwood Police who are making enquiries to identify the individuals.

The theft was one of three incidents to occur while the Walkway office was closed – a large amount of domestic rubbish was dumped near the Walkway track, plus two domesticated rabbits were abandoned near the Education Centre (luckily both were eventually caught and have been re-homed).

Anyone who may have any information about the theft of the plants (or the other two matters) are asked to come forward. The incidents have shocked staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the Walkway is treated with the respect it deserves as a living war memorial.
